“We want to provide the best care possible to our patients”
Tell us about your patients- What makes them awesome?
We work in pediatric GI and see kids with enteral tubes of all kinds form ages newborn to 22 years of age. Our patients are the best and we get to see them regularly so we get to build a relationship with them, their parents and their home health nurses! These kids truly brighten our day!
Tell us about your clinic- How many families does your clinic serve?
Pediatric specialties are relatively new to East Texas and we are growing. We only have one pediatric GI doctor for the entire Northeast Texas area. She started about 2 ½ years ago and has already seen 4600 patients during that time. About 25% of the patients we see here in clinic are G tube or NG tube fed. Our clinic being here saves patients a 3-hour drive to Dallas our Houston to see a GI specialist, saving families a lot of time and money.
Tell us about the enteral goodie bags you create.
We want to provide the best care possible to our patients and we decided to put together enteral backpacks for our patients with educational materials, FreeArms, button buddies, abdominal binders, U Deliver Medical products, and enteral formula samples. We asked for a grant from the Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital Children's Miracle Network to pay for the project and they accepted our request. We have been able to provide our enteral backpacks including the FreeArms at no cost to our families regardless of insurance using the funds provided.
How do families react when you show them the FreeArm for the first time?
They are always amazed at such a unique invention! Especially the parents with kids in carriers or highchairs. They love the idea of not having to carry around the large IV pole all around the house and can use the FreeArm in the car when they are on the go. I relay the story about the designers and how they also had a child with an enteral feeding and just wanted to make life easier. I make sure that the families are aware that these products are donated by the Children's Miracle Network so they can say thank you or support the organization through fundraisers in the future.
Anything else you would like to share or for us to know?
Thank you for designing such an amazing product for our patients to use!
