We loved talking with Lindsey Hall at the University of New Mexico NICU. They have recently begun using the FreeArm and love it! Lindsey told us, “When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to be a physical therapist. I used to volunteer at a local hospital with the Child Life program to gain exposure to the various types of therapists. While volunteering one day, I was given the opportunity to hold a baby in the NICU. I had never even heard of this type of nursing, or considered nursing as a career option. As I held the tiny baby, he began to tremor, he had been exposed to illegal drugs before he was born. My heart broke. I knew at that moment I wanted to be a nurse that could help babies. I have been a nurse for almost 11 years. I obtained my BSN at the University of New Mexico, my MSN at the University of Texas Arlington, and I have also worked as an ECMO specialist with all ages of patients for the last 6 years, in addition to my full time job in the NICU. In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors- hiking, biking, kayaking- anything I can do with my little dog. Yes, he does go on the kayak!”
At FreeArm, we see nurses everyday that have to create systems to hold gravity syringe feeds and open syringes for venting, such as taping syringes to lights or furniture, hanging syringes from cribs and even rubber banding syringes to the oxygen meter on the wall. Syringes have come "untaped" when beds are moved causing the tube to pull out. We are happy to say that the UNM NICU is not rigging feeds, they are using the FreeArm as a stable way to hold syringes for feeding and venting. Thank you UNM!
Lindsey told us, “The maneuverability and functionality of the FreeArm is out of this world!! It can attach to anything- my favorite, being the back of a chair.” The FreeArm helps HCPs in the UNM NICU by improving workflow and less spilled feeds!
“The staff has had nothing but positive things to say! The FreeArm is an exceptional product. Andrew, my colleague and a nurse at UNM, mentioned to me that we needed a better system for venting. He started using the holders that come with the isolettes and said there must be something designed for cribs and warmers. Together, we found the FreeArm!“
Thank you for sharing your story Lindsey, we are so happy that the University of New Mexico NICU loves their FreeArms!
